In February 1979, the Government of Canada authorized the Royal Canadian Mint to establish a special coin program and, on September 5, 1979, the Gold Maple Leaf was introduced. This set of three commemorative proof coins celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Maple Leaf's entry into the market.
The design of the reverse by artist Walter Ott depicts a Canadian maple leaf with the inscription "Canada" at the top. The purity for each coin is shown on either side of the leaf while the metal and the weight appear at the bottom of the coin. The obverse features the effigy of the Queen and the legend "Elizabeth II" at the top. The nominal value and the date are inscribed at the bottom.
