The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series is one of the most well-known coin programs in the world. The Royal Canadian Mint is constantly striking unique individual releases, such as this one, to provide variety to the overarching series. The RCMP was formed in 1873, originally as the NWMP. The Mounties are currently serving in 8 of Canada's 10 provinces and are also responsible for Canadian internal security. They were given the name "Mounties" due to the regions in which they served, horses or in other instances sled dogs were needed.

Each 1997 1 oz Canadian Gold Mountie Maple Leaf Coin will arrive in protective plastic flips. These coins were produced to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or RCMP for short. Notably, these gold coins boast a decagon rim with 10 sides.

Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse field of the 1997 1 oz Canadian Mountie Maple Leaf Coin. Designed by Raphael Maklouf, this depiction showcases Her Majesty in right-profile relief donning the royal diadem. Identifying marks of the coin surround this image.

The reverse of each 1997 Canadian Gold Mountie Maple Leaf Coin features a Mountie. Designed by Ago Aarand this image showcases a Mountie on horseback, holding the Canadian flag. The image is framed by 12 maple leaves.
