Designing a nation's character.
The Coat of Arms for New Brunswick evolved overthe course of more than a century. On May 26,1868, Queen Victoria first assigned the ProvincialShield featuring a gold lion on a red backgroundwith an ancient galley below to represent theprovince's shipbuilding and maritime history. Thecrest and motto followed in 1966 by Order of theLieutenant Governor in Council. The motto, SpemReduxit was inspired by the province's great seal.It means "hope restored," in reference to NewBrunswick's role as a refuge for United EmpireLoyalists.
Other features followed on the province's bicentennialon September 24, 1984 and wereassigned by Royal Warrant of Her Majesty QueenElizabeth II .
