The mountain avens is a dwarf member of the rosefamily that grows at higher altitudes throughoutthe Northern Hemisphere in Canada, the Alps andthe Arctic. Its genus was inspired by the Greekoak-nymph (Dryas) to reflect the oak-like shapeof its leaves.
Dryas integrifolia is a particularly hardy speciesthat was declared the official floral emblem ofthe Northwest Territories in 1957.
