Wampum, beaver pelts, Britishsovereigns, Spanish doubloons, FrenchLouis d'or, American golden eagles:nineteenth-century commercial tradein the Dominion of Canada was afascinating money mosaic. But asCanada evolved, so did the needfor a standard national currency, and Confederation in 1867 hastenedthis need still further.
In 1912, the Mint produced the firstdistinctly Canadian gold coins indenominations of five and ten dollars. They featured the word "Canada,"leafy maple branches, and the shieldfrom Canada's Coat of Arms.
