As the War of 1812 waged on, American and British North American forces continued to battle one another for territorial gains. On July 25, 1814, troops from both sides came face-to-face in an explosive encounter that would bring an end to one last attempted invasion of Upper Canada.
The Battle of Lundy's Lane was one of the fiercest land battles of the War of 1812 à but also one of the deadliest ever fought on Canadian soil, with high casualties suffered on both sides. AsAmerican troops surged forward, the British troops à which included the Canadian militia andFirst Nations allies à fought together valiantly to hold their position and prevent the American troops from moving further north.
¥ Nearly1,800 men were killed, wounded or went missing during the Battle of Lundy's Lane.
¥ The Battle of Lundy's Lane is sometimes referred to as the Battle of Niagara Falls à in fact, the fighting occurred just 2 kilometres west of the famous falls.
¥ Fighting continued atclose range until midnight; the dark night and the thick smoke from artillery fire meant it was difficult for each side to see their adversary in front of them.
¥ Today, the battlegrounds at Lundy's Lane are known as Drummond Hill and include the Drummond Hill Cemetery; it is the final resting place for many of the battle's victims, as well as Laura Secord à Canada's War of 1812 heroine à following her death in 1868.
The coin's finely engraved image shows the intensity of the battle, as American troops (left) surgeforward in an attempt to seize British artillery (right). With bayonets fixed, both sides are engaged in a close-range combat that lasts well into the night. Artillery fire fills the air with smoke while casualties mount on both sides, as shown by the fallen soldiers in the background. The effort would leadthe depleted American troops to retreat, and put an end to their last invasion attempt during the war's final months.
