Despite its sometimes fearsome reputation, the grizzly (Ursus arctos) is actually ashy, solitary creature that lives a relatively calmlife in the forests and mountains across most of Canada's northwest and northern mainland.
Though it has all of the hallmarks of a fearsome predator, most of the grizzly's time is spent foraging for berries and other vegetation-which is where it gets the majority of its bulk. In fact, while grizzlies feaston salmon and other fish when it is available, and will prey on deer, moose, elk, and caribou when necessary, about 90% of their diet is vegetation.
This apex predator has no natural enemies except when it is young. The greatest threat to its survival is habitat erosion and encroachment by humans, who affect grizzlypopulations directly through hunting, road collisions, and other conflicts as well as influencing its distribution, presenting a particular challenge for animals that require large natural ranges with adequate food in order to thrive.
