In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint was the first to introduce a .9999 (99.99%) pure gold bullion coin; its success inspired the 1988 debut of the Silver Maple Leaf (SML) coin, which is crafted annually from .9999 (99.99%) pure silver.
The bar was raised higher in 1998 when the Mint became the world's first refinery to achieve an unprecedented purity level of 99.999%-the highest standard of gold.
Previously only used on numismatic coins, the first 99.999% pure gold bullion coin was introduced in 2007.
The Million Dollar Coin was a 100-kilogram coin crafted from .99999 (99.999%) pure gold with a face value of $1 million. Unveiled in 2007, it set a world record as the largest gold coin.
A purity level of 1.000 (100%) pure silver or gold produces an alloy that is considered to be too soft for coinsand is susceptible to be easily damaged; thus, .99999 is the highest recognized level of purity for an engraved coin-a true masterpiece of the highest degree!
