Skating is one of winter's great delights. Childreneagerly lace up their skates to race, whirl and twirlon frozen ice, barely aware of the long historybehind the fun.
Five thousand years ago, ancient Scandinavianstied bones to their boots and used poles to pushtheir way across frozen lakes. Metal bladesappeared around the 13th century, and theDutch popularized skating as an essential formof winter transportation. The British followed in the17th century, and skating soon became a favouritepastime-fuelled by European settlement in theNew World.
Today, sports like hockey, speed and figure skatingabound. Whether they are played by professionalathletes or recreational enthusiasts; everyadventure began with that first childhood rushacross frozen ice.
