To many First Nations tribes, the moon is a sacred symbol. Because it brightens the darkness and rules the tides, the moon is seen as a powerful protector, grandmother, and matron of the earth. First Nations often carved masks to express the intimate relationship between nature and people-such as the Grandmother Moon, artist Richard Cochrane's interpretation of the moon smiling down at him and onto the earth.
The Royal Canadian Mint has recreated the Grandmother Moon mask in ultra high relief to translatethis beautiful hand-carved mask into a fine silver coin. Order yours today!

¥ Crafted in 99.99% fine silver and GST/HST exempt.
¥ Low mintage of only 6,000 coins.
Design
Your coin is a faithful reproduction of a wooden moon mask created in the mid-2000s by renowned Aboriginal artist Richard Cochrane. It recreates the wood grain of the old-growth Red Cedar used to carve the mask, preserves the two dark growth lines and theprotective ring of eight New Zealand abalone shells. The reverse also features the word "CANADA," the date "2013" and the face value of "25 DOLLARS."
