The spring thaw is underway yet a dusting of snow can be seen around the grassy vegetation in the background. In the foreground, the drake stands on ice near the water's edge, its long tail feathers stretching past the coin's raised circular frame. The mottled brown female strikes a colourful contrast next to her mate as they survey their home for the breeding season.

The coloured reverse image by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant depicts a pair of northern pintails which have made the arduous journey home to their Canadian habitat.
