The enigmatic grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) is famously associated with the rugged beauty of Canada's forests, and has long been a revered cultural and spiritual symbol for the First Nations people. It is a curious and highly intelligent species, with a long-term memory that retains the location of food or water sources within its range in the forests of western and northern Canada. While it is both feared and respected, the grizzly plays an important role in the ecosystem it inhabits; its reclusive nature only adds to its powerful mystique, making rare encounters thrilling-but best viewed from a distance.

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Maurade Baynton, your coin features a beautifully engraved wildlife portrait of a mighty grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) at the water's edge. With the dense alpine forest filling the background behind it, the hungry bear has stepped beyond the rocky shores of a pond and into the water, sending a ripple of gentle waves across the mirror-like surface. The grizzly bear's characteristic hump is all the more prominent as this iconic animal lowers its head and seemingly gazes at its reflection in the water, whichis beautifully recreated through careful finishing techniques.
