Hardy like the people it represents, the sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is adept at surviving in a wide variety of soils. This maple species depends on occasional rain to nourish its surroundings and help it flourish as a strong, moderatelyto deeply rooted tree that is a celebrated part of Canada's natural heritage.
The sugar maple grows naturally in the mixed forestsof eastern Canada-specifically from southeastern Manitoba to Nova Scotia, and south into the central United States. For centuries, its wood has made it a prized hardwood species, while its sap is unrivalled for producing the world's finest maple syrup. The maples' designation as Canada's national tree is testament to its historic importance, trumped only by its sentimental value-as the inspiration for our national flag, and for its spectacular transformation that defines the autumn coloursof the Canadian landscape.

Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Lisa Thomson-Khan, your coin combines artistry with technical precision to convey the serenity and peacefulness of an autumnday in Canada. A babbling brook winds its way through this tranquil woodland setting, where the gentlyrippled surface of the water beckons the viewer toexplore its rock-lined edge. True to its appearancein nature, the autumn colours of the sugar maple tree (Acer saccharum) on the reverse design are breathtaking, where the selective application of colour immediately draw the eyes towards the red and golden foliage above the stream. One can almost hear the cadence of a gentle rain falling onto the leaves and rolling off their serrated tips, as beautifully conveyed by the glittering, raindrop-shaped Swarovski ¨ crystal.
