Design:
Your elegant and classic coin design by Canadian artist Simon Ngfeatures a combination of Chinese motifs representing the auspicious "Five Blessings"; consisting of five bats surrounding the Chinese character shou (longevity), each bat representing health, wealth, longevity, virtueand a peaceful natural death in old age. The squarehole in the centre is a distinct feature of ancientChinese coins which represents the land. It's framed by a circle of finely engraved scrolls and symbolic floral elements, while traditional Chinese latticework flows along the outer edge of the coin design. The floral elements also compliment the ornate scrollwork on the coin's unique obverse, where the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is engraved with remarkable finesse in a smoothly polished circle above the square hole.
Did you knowÃ
Placing a bat behind one's workstation is believed to attract good fortune and abundance, and repel negative energy. Hanging a bat in a prominent position by the front door or in the central hallway is also believed to boost one's career and prosperity.
It's no accident there are flowers in this coin design. Chinese culture is all about balance, and the bats in the design have a male (yang) energy, which is counterbalanced by the feminine (yin) energy of the flowers. The result? Harmony!
Many symbols in Chinese culture are the result of homophones (puns) where two words have the same pronunciation and are therefore given the same meaning. The number 8 is a strategic choice for this coin's mintage because it is pronounced b_ which is similar to f_ (rich), and is therefore believed to bring wealth and prosperity!
Coins with square holes appeared in China around 500 BC as a means to string coins on a cord to form the main purchasing unit in use at the time (usually 1,000 coins). In a culture rich in art and symbolism, the coin's round shape was soon interpreted to symbolize heaven, while the square hole represented land.
