The reverse design by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with two symbols of the war: a large "V" for Victory and a field of poppies. Selective colour highlights the flowers of remembrance that line a v-shaped pathway. Above them, rays of sunlight streaming through the clouds are an expression of hope for a brighter, peaceful future. The reverse also includes the word "CANADA" near the curved rim, whilethe face value "5 DOLLARS" and the year "2020" are inscribed below. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth IIby Susanna Blunt.
"The Legion's Poppy image embodies very deep meaning for Canadiansà sacrifice, remembrance, and thankfulness. The poppies on the Remembrance coin by The Royal Canadian Mint reflect these emotions poignantly, while marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War."
Thomas D. Irvine, CD. Dominion President, The Royal Canadian Legion
"From 1939 to 1945, more than 1,000,000Canadians and Newfoundlanders put their lives on hold to serve in uniform à and more than 45,000 of our brave men and women never came back. Now, 75 years since the end of the Second World War, we continue to remember the sacrifices of the brave soldiers, sailors and airmen who risked their lives, and those who lost them, for the freedom of others. The Royal Canadian Mint's new 2020 Remembrance Day coin helps us all commemorate the service of our Veterans, military service members, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police."
The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, PC, MP, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence
Did you knowÃ
The poppy has served as Canada's Flower of Remembrance since 1921. Today, it honours the memory of the more than 118,000 Canadian servicemen and women who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The first ceremony to honour Canada's fallen soldiers tookplace in 1919, on the first anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War. Between 1919 and 1930, November 11 was known as Armistice Day, which was renamed Remembrance Day in 1931 in order to keep the focus on those who served and died.
